Chugiak falls 8-1 to host Oregon on Day 1 of Northwest Regionals

Chugiak Post 33 didn’t win tonight’s game, but Zach Brueggemann delivered the play of the game for the Mustangs.
Brueggemann’s RBI single with two outs in the seventh inning broke up a no-hitter as Eugene, Oregon, won 8-1 on the first day of the Northwest Regional Tournament in Eugene.
It was Chugiak’s only hit of the game.
Eugene pitchers racked up 16 strikeouts, with starter Joe Schindler fanning 12 of the first 21 batters he faced.
The Oregon state champions scored four runs in the second inning to take control early.
Chugiak, the Alaska state champs, scored in the seventh after Deven Ferriss walked and stole second and then stole third. With two outs and the count 3-2, Brueggemann rapped a base hit to left field.
Chugiak starter Chase Wilson pitched eight innings, scattering 12 hits and two walks. He struck out seven. Only four of the eight runs he surrendered were earned.
Alex Hess and John Ives each drew walks for Chugiak [22-19], which dropped into the loser’s bracket.
The Mustangs will face Waipahu, Hawaii, a 12-9 loser to Idaho Falls, Idaho, in a game that featured 31 hits and eight errors.
