Clevenger, Lauwers, Ferntheil highlight Legion all-state

By Van Williams

There are few twin threats in Alaska Legion baseball like Cory Clevenger and Dylan Lauwers of Dimond Post 21, and Zach Ferntheil of Service Post 28.

They are among the best when it comes to hitting and pitching.

So much so that they were the only players selected at both positions to the Team of Excellence All-State Team in a vote by post managers and coaches.

Clevenger – the reigning high school MVP – continued his terrific play by leading the state with 46 RBIs and going 5-1 with a 2.31 ERA during the regular season.

The infielder hit .429 with 25 extra-base hits.

Lauwers was the ultimate table setter at the top of the lineup for Dimond.

The speedy outfielder led the state with 46 runs and added 13 stolen bases.

On the mound he posted 4-0, 2.36 totals.

Together, Lauwers and Clevenger combined to win 11 games – more than seven of the 11 teams in the league.

Ferntheil has been the most important player for Service, delivering clutch performances when it mattered most. Take the championship game of the Midnight Sun Tournament or the regular-season finale against South Post 4.

Both times he pitched his team to victory.

The crafty righty won a state-best six games (6-1) with a 3.09 ERA and 46 strikeouts.

At the plate he hit .340 with 22 runs and 21 RBIs at was picked as a utility player.

His brother, Stephen, made the team at catcher after an impressive season that saw him hit .495 with 37 RBIs, 33 runs and 10 stolen bases.

Other stars included the Fairbanks Post 11/30/57 combination of outfielder Jace Lovell and catcher Matthew Wixon.

Lovell hit .525 with 28 RBIs, two triples and a home run.

Wixon was No. 1 in the state with a .554 batting average and five triples. He scored 25 times and stole 10 bases.

Kenai Post 20 outfielder A.J. Hull hit .319 with a pair of home runs.

South infielder Bryan Baker hit .458 with 25 RBIs and a state-best 17 stolen bases, and Chugiak Post 33 infielder Cameron Fritz hit .397 with 15 stolen bases.

Eagle River outfielder Travis Ahlgren hit .377 with 26 runs and 13 stolen bases and teammate catch Zach Weller hit .526 with a home run and 26 RBIs.

South pitcher Max Karnos went 3-1 with a state-best 1.53 ERA.
