Given the ball in a closer role for the first time this season, Max Karnos of Anchorage shut it down.

The freshman pitcher threw two innings of hitless relief to combine with Western Nevada College teammate Christian Solo on a 3-hitter in a 5-0 victory over Salt Lake in Utah.

The win moved WNC into the Scenic West Athletic Conference finals.

Karnos, a 6-foot-3 righty, struck out three of the seven batters he faced.

“Max did a good job of putting up two goose eggs in his first closing appearance,” Western Nevada coach D.J. Whittemore told the Nevada Appeal.

Karnos, of South High fame, lowered his ERA to 3.66 in a team-high 71.1 innings.
