Service starter Johnny Meszaros on Friday struck out a career-high 17 batters to lead the Cougars to a 3-0 victory over West at Mulcahy Stadium to clinch the team's second consecutive Cook Inlet Conference title.
Meszaros outdueled West ace Dalton G. Chapman, who struck out 12 and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Both pitchers finished with 1-hitters.
Service finished the conference season with an 8-2 record, one better than South at 7-3.
Both teams will represent the CIC at the ASAA/First National Bank State Tournament next week in Anchorage.
Meszaros, who relied mostly on fastballs, struck out the side four times, including the seventh inning.
The powerful right-hander allowed just one hit, to Mac Evans. So did Chapman, to Matt Yandell.
Meszaros matched the CIC strikeout season high of 17 set earlier this year by South's Max Karnos.
Speaking of Karnos, he roped a two-run triple and later scored in the first inning to lead South to a 7-5 victory over Chugiak in a game that decided the CIC's second berth to state.
The Wolverines scored four times in the top of the first, plenty of support for starting pitcher Brad Butcher, who went the distance.
