Service clinches state berth, Chugiak-South to play for one

What a crazy night in the Cook Inlet Conference playoffs.
Top-seeded Service on Thursday rallied from a six-run first inning deficit to post a 16-6 victory over No. 3 Chugiak while No. 4 South knocked out No. 2 West with a 15-0 victory in the second of three championship pool-play games at Mulcahy Stadium.
Service clinched its second straight berth to the state tournament by virtue of finishing first or second in the league while the CIC's other berth is up for grabs between Chugiak and South.
Chugiak and South play Friday at 4:30 p.m. and Service and West play at 7 p.m. Both games are at Mulcahy.
Even if Chugiak and South have the same record at 6-4, Chugiak would win all the tiebreakers and advance.
Here's the thing, though, South could still win the pennant.
A South win coupled with a Service loss means the teams would need to play an if-necessary game Saturday at 1 p.m. for the conference championship. Both teams would advance to state, but only one goes in as CIC champs.
Here are the playoff scenarios heading into tomorrow:
Scenario 1: Service beats West, Chugiak beats South
*1 Service 8-2
*2 Chugiak 6-4 [wins head-to-head tiebreaker]
Scenario 2: Service beats West, South beats Chugiak
*1 Service 8-2
*2 South 7-3
Scenario 3: West beats Service, Chugiak beats South
*1 Service 7-3
*2 Chugiak 6-4 [wins tiebreaker, if any one team won three or more games versus the others that are tied, that team advances]
Scenario 4: West beats Service, South beats Chugiak
*1 South 7-3 [if-necessary game needed to determine champion]
*2 Service 7-3
