Service, South looking to clinch

Service and South could both secure ASAA State Baseball Tournament berths with victories Friday night.
No. 1 seed Service [7-0] plays No. 4 Dimond [4-3] at Mulcahy Stadium. Meanwhile, No. 2 South [6-1] plays No. 3 Chugiak [4-3] at Chad Bax Field. Both games start at 6:30.
These four teams finished in the top half of the Cook Inlet Conference after the regular season, qualifying them for the championship round that will help determine which two teams advance to the state tournament.
The other four teams [Eagle River, West, Bartlett, East] dropped into the consolation round.
In pool play, each team plays each other once this week. The overall records don’t change from the regular season.
That means the Service Cougars are in the driver’s seat.
As the CIC’s only undefeated team, Service has to win only one of the final three games to clinch a postseason berth. The Cougars haven’t been to the state tournament since winning it all in 2001.
Service is also trying to become just the second team in the 21-year history of the CIC to finish the regular season without a loss.
Service will face a Dimond team it just beat 6-2 on Tuesday.
The South Wolverines are sitting pretty, too.
The reigning state champions are a game behind Service in the loss column, but a victory Friday would assure them getting a chance to defending their title.
South plays a Chugiak team it beat 8-2 on May 7.
The championship round continues Saturday at Mulcahy Stadium with Service-Chugiak at 1 p.m. and South-Dimond at 4 p.m.
Both games are on the radio, simulcast on AM-590 and FM 96.7 stations.
On Monday night, the games are Service vs. South at Mulcahy Stadium and Chugiak vs. Dimond at Oberg Field.
In the consolation round, tonight’s games include Eagle River vs. East at Mulcahy Stadium and West vs. Bartlett at Oberg Field.
On Saturday at Mulcahy Stadium, West vs. East play at 10 a.m. and Eagle River vs. Bartlett play at 7 p.m.
On Monday, the final day has Eagle River vs. West at Chad Bax and Bartlett vs. East at Kosinski 2.
