South beats Idaho, advances to final four at NWCART Tourney

There was no way South Post 4 would let another early lead slip away.
One day after squandering a 7-0 lead, the Wolverines built an 8-0 cushion and never let up in a 14-2 victory over Nampa, Idaho, in an elimination game at the NWCART Tournament in Wheatland, Wyoming.
Andrew Martin belted a grand slam, Brad Butcher had four hits and Nick Jensen pitched a 7-inning complete game to lead South into Monday’s game against Central Point, Oregon. Central Point has already assured itself a spot in Tuesday’s championship game, but a loss would end South’s season.
The Wolverines [28-9] still have plenty in the tank and have the pitching and hitting to make a title run. They are yet to throw Butcher and Bryan Baker. Meanwhile, they have racked up 41 runs in three games.
“We’ve been knocking the ball around pretty well,” said South leadoff hitter Andy Schafer, who scored three runs today. “It’s been fun.”
Martin provided South with an 8-0 lead in the fourth inning after he belted a home run over the center field fence with the bases loaded.
“Going up to bat I knew I needed to put a bat on the ball and at least score Andy from third. I put a pretty good swing on the fastball that I hit,” Martin said. “I honestly just thought it was a sac fly to center field but when I reached first base I looked up and it was over the fence.”
His teammates went nuts. Nampa spirits sunk.
“It was kind of surreal watching everything,” he said. “That kind of took the momentum out of them right there.”
Unlike yesterday in a 14-13 loss to Laurel, Montana, the Wolverines kept the petal to the medal.
Butcher led the way, going 4-for-5 with two triples and three RBIs.
It was more than enough support for Jensen, who scattered six hits and two walks in going the distance.
“We have a lot of confidence in him,” Schafer said of Jensen. “He’s as good as anybody down here.”
