Wasilla disqualified from State Tournament for ineligible player

Wasilla Post 35 has been disqualified from the Alaska Legion State Baseball Tournament, Legion officials announced tonight, after it was discovered that the Wasilla team used an ineligible player.
This player violated Alaska's dual participation rule which precludes players from other baseball activities when it causes a player to miss scheduled American Legion games in the process. The Legion season runs for approximately eight weeks from about early June through early August.
The information about the ineligible player was provided to members of the Alaska American Legion Baseball Committee on Sunday night and verified on Monday afternoon with calls to the other baseball organization that revealed the player did in fact attend the event outside of Alaska. The player in question missed American Legion scheduled games in that time period with his Wasilla team.
This Alaska Legion Baseball policy has been in place for many years in the state and penalties are outlined in the Alaska American Legion rules. The 2014 Alaska Legion rules have been posted for several months at the state’s official Legion website.
The penalty forced Wasilla to forfeit today's 2-1 victory over Juneau during state tournament consolation play at Mulcahy Stadium and eliminated Wasilla from the tournament.
As a result, Juneau Post 25 will advance to play Chugiak Post 33 – an 11-8 winner over Kenai earlier Monday - on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
The Alaska Department of American Legion Baseball Committee issued a statement:
“American Legion Baseball in Alaska believes that team loyalty is a key ingredient for any team sport. Some high school sports in Alaska have similar dictates limiting team participation during the high school season. The Alaska rule essentially applies only eight weeks out of the calendar year when the American Legion season takes place. The other 44 weeks of the year are open for players to attend other baseball activities in and out of the state of Alaska.”
