The Wasilla Post 35 A team went old school en route to winning the 2012 Chugiak Wood Bat Tournament title.

Thanks to effective pitching, defense and base running, the Road Warriors went 3-1 overall and beat Fairbanks Post 11, 30, 57 today 3-0 in the championship game at Oberg Field.

"The pitching was absolutely incredible," said Wasilla coach Gary Skan. "They didn’t try to overpower batters. They relied on their defense for the most part."

Wasilla starter Dalton McHugill shut out Fairbanks over all 7 innings, helping his team avenge its only loss in the tournament.

Defensively, tournament MVP Jake Grissom also showed off his awesome arm today. The catcher threw out three base runners trying to steal, including the final out of the game.

Offensively, the Road Warriors averaged 9 hits and 4 stolen bases per game in the tournament.

"They’re approach at the plate was fantastic," Skan said. "The last couple weeks we’ve been trying to instill in them to make the pitcher pitch where they want to hit, instead of swinging at all the other pitches. I was very happy this weekend."

Wasilla is now 13-3 overall.
